What to expect when transferring a firearm or having a firearm transferred to you

• All in person firearm transfers must take place at the Colorado Springs location listed on the FFL license.
• You will be required to bring a Colorado Driver’s license or state ID card. State residency requirements dictate we generally, MAY NOT sell or transfer a firearm to a non-licensee who resides outside the State in which our licensed premises is located (Colorado).
  • Generally, FFLs may transfer firearms to other FFLs, including interstate transfers, without completing Form 4473. If you purchase a firearm from SSP Firearms LLC and live out of state we are required to ship to a licensed FFL, and upon picking up the firearm from that FFL, you will still be required to fill out the form 4473.
• Military members on active duty and legal aliens have special residency considerations.
  • A member of the Armed Forces on active duty is a resident of the State in which his or her permanent duty station is located. We may accept electronic permanent change of station (PCS) orders, accompanied by a valid military identification card, to establish residency for an active-duty military member of the Armed Forces.
  • A buyer who is not a citizen of the United States must provide additional documentation (beyond a valid Government-issued photo identification that contains the buyer’s name, residence address, and date of birth) to establish that he or she has resided in a State continuously for at least 90 days immediately prior to the date of the sale or delivery of the firearm. Examples of acceptable documentation include, but are not limited to, utility bills, bank statements, rent receipts, and mortgage payments. This original documentation must contain the buyer’s name (not the name of someone they are living with) and home address
• A form 4473 must be completed and a background check ran. The buyer or other transferee must personally complete ALL information required in Section A (Items 1 to 17), and Section C (Items 24 and 25), if applicable, of the Form 4473. BEFORE you transfer the firearm.
  • The person who fills out the 4473 forms must be the person who picks up the firearm
• Only exceptions to the form 4473
  • Transfer of a firearm to another FFL (including collectors when transferring a Curio & Relic firearm)
  • The return of a repaired firearm to the person from whom it was received.
  • The sale of a firearm to a law enforcement agency or to a law enforcement officer for official duties if the transaction meets the requirements of 27 CFR §478.134, discussed on pages 7 and 8; or
  • Transfer of a replacement firearm of the same kind and type to the person from whom a firearm was received.
• Age restrictions
  • Federal law, mandates minimum age to purchase firearms and ammunition from an FFL is 18. If the firearm is other than a rifle or a shotgun—or ammunition for other than a rifle or a shotgun—the minimum age is 21 [18 U.S.C. 922(b)(1)]. However:
    • You may buy ammunition that is interchangeable between rifles and handguns to a buyer who is at least 18 years of age if you intend to use the ammunition in a rifle.
• SSP Firearms LLC is a Colorado Springs homebased FFL business (legally zoned and credentialed to do business at our home) and for security reasons we don’t publicly share our address. If you are considering using us for your transfer, please call to make an appointment and discuss your transfer. We will provide our location and answer any questions then.
• Firearm Transfer Fees
  • Private Party Gun Transfers- $10.50 background check, 35 Transfer Fee
    • Both parties will need a valid Colorado driver’s license or ID card with their your current address.
    • Recipient will complete a background check and pay the $10.50 Colorado Bureau of Investigations fee.
    • After completion and approval of background check a $35 transfer fee will be due.
  • Gun Transfers from online/out of state- $10.50 background check, $30 Transfer Fee

The transfer process can sound complicated if your new to it, but it is actually fairly straight forward. Typically, the process will run 20 to 40 minutes depending on how long background checks from the state take. If you have any questions, please feel free to call, we are happy to help.
