The Search For Inexpensive Pistol Lights That Perform

Greetings! Today, I will review the OLIGHT PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie, a compact, modestly priced weapon-mounted light. As a firearms professional, I have tested and used many weapon lights. I do have pricier lights mounted that I am very happy with, but when I hear of a product that holds up over time and can get the job done, I like to check it out. I’ll share my findings in this “OLIGHT PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie Product Review” post.

A little Bit of Background

I purchased the OLIGHT PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie for a PSA 5.7 pistol that I recently picked up. Previously, I owned the FN 5.7 and was a big fan! Unfortunately, the FN, along with several other firearms, was a casualty in funding my divorce almost 20 years ago.

The PSA 5.7 was significantly cheaper than the FN, and I didn’t want to spend much money on a light until I could test the handgun, so I chose less expensive options for the light and sights. Below is my take on whether the modest amount I spent on the OLIGHT was worth the dough.

PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie vs. OLIGHT PL-3 Valkyrie on the PSA Rock 5.7

I tried both the mini and the full-size OLIGHT PL-3 Valkyrie, and although I felt the bigger light looked better on the pistol, I opted for the mini. The deciding factor was how comfortable the switch was on the mini. It rested right on the front of the trigger guard, while the larger lights switch was a bit more of a reach to engage. The light is stronger on the PL-3, but the mini light things up to my satisfaction.

My Weapon Light Criteria

Everyone’s criteria for a pistol light will be different, but for a frame of reference, I’ll share what I wanted in a light. I wouldn’t be using the 5.7 as a carry piece but more as a bedside pistol, so my demands were a bit different than if I were using the gun for a daily carry.

• I did not want the light to stick out past the slide.
• The light should be enough to illuminate my house, but not the outdoors as a priority.
• I wanted a very comfortable transition from trigger to light switch.
• I was less concerned with a battery-powered light because the charger would likely be right by the pistol.

OLIGHT PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie

The PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie, on paper, looked suitable for my demands. Weighing just 2.57 ounces and measuring a little over two inches in length, this light has 600 lumens of brightness and 2500 candela output. Whether I needed to identify a potential threat or illuminate a dark area quickly, I felt the light would have me covered. This versatile light is compatible with a wide range of handguns, allowing you to mount it on your preferred firearm easily. The light has two modes, one for touch to activate momentarily and one for constant on.

Regarding ergonomics, the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie tucks right into the trigger guard and is very accessible to activate.. Its complete housing adjustability also allows for customization and compatibility with various platforms. Whether you’re a right-handed shooter or a lefty, this light operates the same. You won’t need to replace batteries. The PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie is easily charged as a home pistol with its rechargeable battery.

Features of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie

The PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie doesn’t have the features of some lights that are three to four times the price, but it will get the job done effectively for close-quarters illumination. Its compact and lightweight design (2.57 oz) allows easy carry and mounting on a wide range of handguns, making it a versatile option. The specifications state the 600-lumen light has a beam throw range of 100 meters. I did a little test on this to satisfy my curiosity, and the results are listed below.

The PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie features a simple two-setting operation for easy activation, including an on/off mode and a momentary mode for quick bursts of light. The light is also rechargeable, utilizing a proprietary magnetic charging system that is convenient and reliable. It is spec’d at a 60-minute run time.

Design and Ergonomics of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie

Some of you may feel the light is too small

for a handgun the size of the PSA Rock 5.7, and the photos do actually make it look small, but in hand, it works well and performs excellent

The battery and charging system of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie is easily located at the bottom of the light and doesn’t require removal for charging. The light is powered by a rechargeable polymer lithium-ion battery, which provides enough power for a continuous hour of use. This ensures that the light can last through extended periods of engagement without

the need for frequent battery changes. The rechargeable battery also eliminates the hassle and cost of constantly purchasing and replacing disposable batteries, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly option.

The PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie’s charging system utilizes a snap-on puck-type magnetic charger, similar to the charging system used for Apple Watches. This convenient and reliable charging system allows easy and hassle-free charging. Attach the magnetic charger to the designated charging port on

the light itself to charge the light. The magnetic connection ensures secure and stable charging.

Charging Indicator

A small built-in charging indicator on the charger helps monitor the charging status of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie. When the light is charging, the indicator shows a red light. Once the battery is fully charged, the indicator switches to green, indicating the light is ready for use. This simple and intuitive charging indicator eliminates any guesswork and ensures that users can easily determine when the light is fully charged and ready to be deployed.

Testing the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie in Action

As part of my evaluation of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie, I conducted makeshift performance testing to assess its capabilities in low-light conditions. Its ability to deliver a bright beam of light impressed me, providing ample visibility for target identification and engagement. The light’s 600 lumens of brightness proved highly effective in illuminating close-quarters dark areas, allowing for clear and precise visuals. It wouldn’t be my first choice outside, but the performance was respectable.

Low-Light Performance

I specifically evaluated the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie’s performance during the testing phase in close-quarter low-light environments. The beam illuminated the surroundings effectively, providing visibility to navigate and engage targets. The photo to the right was taken in a pitch-black dark basement hall, and the light lit the area up from the tip of the slide down the hall.

I tested it throughout the house, which is my intended use, and it did not disappoint. The beam is wide,, and even in the much more expansive living room, it lit the length and the width as if the house light was on.

Beam Throw Testing

I didn’t go all out to assess the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie’s beam throw capabilities because, again, that’s not what I’ll be using it for. After removing the light from the gun, I ran up to the park across from my house to get perspective on its application outdoors.

The PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie is spec’d to carry the beam 100 yards; although my test was anything but scientific, I would be comfortable using it in an effective range of about half that. That being said, it works for me. I have an FN 509 that I carry that has a light well-suited for the outdoors, and that isn’t my intended purpose for the OLIGHT. You decide what works for you.

Overall, in my humble opion the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie’s performance in low-light conditions was solid. Its bright and focused beam, combined with its suitable beam throw range, makes it a respectable choice for my in-home defense purpose and a bargain at the price.

Price Comparison to Other Weapon Lights

As we can see, the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie holds its own against these well-known weapon light brands in price. Ultimately, depending on the application, you must decide if the other lights’ additional performance, hardiness, and features merit the price. I have purchased and used all but one of these lights and found value for the intended purpose with every purchase, with the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie being no exception.

Pros and Cons of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie

The PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie’s several strengths contribute to its success. Its compact and lightweight design allows easy carry without adding bulk or weight to your handgun. The adjustable housing of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie is also worth noting, as it offers ergonomic capacity and compatibility with various handguns.

Another significant strength of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie is its close-quarter capabilities. With a brightness of 600 lumens and a good beam throw range, this light delivers a focused beam that can effectively illuminate dark areas. This weapon light’s simplicity and ease of use are commendable, with its two-setting operation and ambidextrous paddle switches for easy activation. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the price also has a bearing. What it delivers for the price provides excellent value.

That being said, it’s important to consider the potential weaknesses or cons of the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie. While the advertised lumens are impressive, I felt that they are aggressive. I found the light very suitable and functional but wouldn’t be comfortable if I did have to pick targets out in the dark at 100 yards. Additionally, the rechargeable battery may not be preferred by all users, who may prefer disposable batteries. When considering the PL-Mini 2 Valkyrie as your weapon light of choice, these factors should be considered.

Finding holsters that accommodate individual pistol lights is not always easy, but Olight lists certified Holster manufacturers on their website, and as I find more, I will add them here.

For the PSA 5.7, which can be a hard holster to find, I opted for the Close Quarters Kydex IWB and liked it so much I came back to their website and picked up the OWB and two magazine holders.
