Chameleon, Iridescent, Oil Slick AR’s
Firearms have always been an important aspect of American culture, with a rich history dating back to the country’s founding fathers and Iridescent ARs are the evolution of culture. In recent years, however, the firearms industry has seen a growing trend in the customization and personalization of firearms, including the AR-15. One particular customization that has gained popularity among firearm enthusiasts (including our team) is iridescence.
Iridescence, also known as “rainbow”, “oil-slick,” and other names, refers to the phenomenon where an object appears to change color as it is viewed from different angles. The effect is achieved by applying a special type of coating to the firearm that uses light interference to produce a multi-colored, metallic sheen. The result is a unique and eye-catching look that sets the firearm apart from others. In our case the technical name of the AR-15 we built parts is “Rainbow PVD Coated” by GunTec.
This was one our team’s favorite builds, and it turned out great.
Why are Iridescent AR-15s Popular?
Personalization: Iridescent AR-15s allow firearm owners to express their individuality and personal style. With a rainbow of colors and a unique metallic sheen, these firearms are truly one-of-a-kind.
Versatility: Iridescent AR-15s can be used for various purposes, including target shooting, hunting, and self-defense. The multi-colored look makes them suitable for various activities and environments. The gun’s functionality is not affected, and the parts are not simply built for appurtenance; they hold up in function.
Attention-grabbing: Iridescent AR-15s are designed to turn heads and make a statement. They will grab the attention of anyone who sees them, making them a popular choice.
Durability: Iridescent AR-15s are made with high-quality materials built to last. The special coating is highly durable and resistant to wear and tear, ensuring that the firearm will look just as good as the day it was bought for years to come.
Price: Although by appearance, the Iridescent AR looks like it would be more expensive than a typical AR-15, they actually can be built comparably to building most AR-15s.
AR Love, Hate Relationships
The AR-15 is one of the most popular firearms in the United States, and with its popularity comes a wide range of customization options. Iridescence is hotly debated topic in the firearms community and online in particular. We’ve talked about some attractions, but why so many people don’t like them is equally as long.
Some that I hear frequently are:
- Distracting: Some people feel that iridescent AR-15s are too flashy and distracting, detracting from the purpose and practicality of the firearm.
- Unprofessional: For some, the iridescent look is seen as unprofessional and not suitable for serious firearms use. They argue that the bright, rainbow-like appearance is not appropriate for a weapon that is meant to be used for serious purposes.
- Too Trendy: Some firearms enthusiasts believe that iridescence is just a passing trend and not a true representation of the AR-15. They feel that the customization is too focused on appearance and not enough on practicality and function.
The love-hate relationship with iridescent AR-15s comes from personal preference and individual opinions. As you can see from our build and this blog, where we come in on the topic. For us, we have done much more controversial builds than this one, including the “Skull AR-15″ and our most recent build The Spartan, built off the Overthrow receiver by Sharp’s Brothers. Ultimately, the decision to choose an iridescent AR-15 comes down to the individual and what they value in a firearm.
Parts in Our Iridescent AR-15 Build
The cost of building an iridescent AR-15 varies greatly depending on the components you choose, how many tools you already have, and the assembly method. On average, you can expect to spend anywhere from $600 to $1500 to build a custom iridescent AR-15. The bulk of the cost will come from the lower receiver, which is the part that is regulated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The barrel can range from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars, depending on the quality and material. Other factors that will affect the cost include the type of stock, grip, sights, and accessories you choose, as well as the cost of any tools and equipment you may need to assemble the rifle. Ultimately, the cost of building an iridescent AR-15 will depend on your individual preferences and the level of customization you desire.
